I am head of contrast’s European privacy and data protection practice. I have extensive experience in various aspects of privacy and data protection law matters, including investigations conducted by the Belgian Data Protection Authority and GDPR compliance audits both for international and Belgian companies in a range of different industry sectors; from the automotive industry to retail and consultancy. I advise clients among others on complex issues resulting from the GDPR and ePrivacy legislation (direct marketing, cookies and machine-to-machine communications). In addition, I am the Data Protection Officer for the Flemish Bar Association.
I joined contrast in 2010 and am counsel since 2019. In The Legal 500 I am ranked as ‘rising star’. I hold a master’s degree in law from the University of Antwerp (magna cum laude). As part of my education, I studied both in Paris (University of Paris V, Erasmus Programme) and in Michigan, US (AFS exchange programme).
My publications include the book ‘Gegevensbescherming in de praktijk' (Antwerpen-Cambridge, Intersentia 2019, 219 p., with E. Declerck). I am affiliated researcher at the multidisciplinary Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (‘LSTS’) of the Free University of Brussels (‘VUB’). As of 2020, I teach a course on data protection at the Flemish Bar Association’s institute for lawyers-trainees in preparation of their bar exam.
I am a member of the Brussels bar. I speak Dutch, English and French.
Counsel Anouk Focquet leads the team; she garners praise for her ‘very strong knowledge of European privacy and data protection legislation, and has the great ability to make complex legal issues in that area comprehensible for the client together with a commercial mindset and a solution-finding attitude’.
